Cultivar Differences: Erode, Salem, Nizamabad & Lakadong
India supplies over 75% of global turmeric commerce. However, industrial buyers must navigate significant variations across regional cultivars. While commodity turmeric from high-rainfall zones often yields pale coloration and meager curcumin (1.5% - 2.5%), premier varieties like Erode and Salem produce thick, deep-orange rhizomes packed with natural essential oils (> 3.0%) and high active curcuminoids (3.5% - 5.0%).
At Jugrajj Food & Herbs, our procurement centers exclusively on cured primary finger and bulb rhizomes from certified farmer groups in Erode, ensuring lot-to-lot consistency in coloration, aroma, and therapeutic potency.
Testing for Active Curcumin: HPLC vs Spectrophotometric Assay
Curcuminoid concentration determines the commercial value of turmeric. Traditional ASTA spectrophotometric methods measure total yellow absorbance, which can be fooled by synthetic dyes. Our quality lab verifies batches via High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), quantifying the individual peaks of all three primary curcuminoids:
- Curcumin (Diferuloylmethane): ~75-80% of total curcuminoids.
- Demethoxycurcumin: ~15-20%.
- Bisdemethoxycurcumin: ~3-5%.
Our standard export grade guarantees a verified total curcuminoid concentration of ≥ 3.5%, with premium super-curcumin lots exceeding 5.0% available upon contract reservation.
Adulteration Hazards: Screening for Lead Chromate & Metanil Yellow
Due to intense market price pressures, commodity turmeric trading carries well-documented food safety risks—most notably the illegal polishing of raw fingers with bright yellow lead chromate powder or carcinogenic azo dyes like metanil yellow and Sudan dyes.
Jugrajj Food & Herbs operates a zero-tolerance adulteration defense. Every raw batch is tested via Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for elemental lead (Pb < 0.5 ppm) and screened via thin-layer chromatography for illegal synthetic colorants. Certificates of Analysis demonstrating zero adulteration accompany every commercial release.
Steam Sterilization & Controlled Cryogenic Pulverization
Traditional sun-dried turmeric often carries high bacterial loads and heat-sensitive volatile terpenes. To satisfy European and North American microbiological import tolerances without using ionizing radiation (ETO or Gamma irradiation, which are rejected by clean-label buyers), we employ high-temperature short-time (HTST) steam sterilization.
Sterilized rhizomes are subsequently pulverized in chilled pin mills maintaining temperatures below 40°C. This prevents burning of volatile turmerone and zingiberene oils, yielding a vibrant, aromatic 80-100 mesh powder with uncompromised dispersibility.
Private Label Packaging & Bulk Container Specifications
We accommodate both industrial bulk buyers and private-label retail brands. Bulk orders are supplied in 25 kg 4-ply kraft paper sacks with inner polyethylene heat-sealed liners or heavy-duty polypropylene woven bags. For private label clients, we offer nitrogen-flushed stand-up pouches (100g, 250g, 500g, 1kg) and composite canisters with tamper-evident induction seals.
